Mum's Stripes

Mum's striped dress - out the suitcase for the heatwave last week. Keeping me cool as I catch up with family via video call... It's been a busy couple of weeks trying to get back in to the swing of styling and shooting. I first remember wearing this on the beach on Cornwall when I was about 16, so thrilled I still have it.

Jackie

As we get in to the depths of winter I am naturally thinking about..... summer dressing. How fabulous is Jackie (and her sister Lee, in the second photo), Capri, 1970

Preen Dreams

Prep for an editorial this week - this Preen dress of dreams is my pick of the bunch. Especially with a vintage cowboy boot!

Fur and Frill

During a visit to the V&A recently I was drawn to the cases of carefully preserved clothes that seemed to really resonate with fashion's current love of all things 70s. Velvet, fur and silk... fashion actually does go in circles.
This arctic fox fur trimmed coat is late 19th Century fare
And these frills and starched bows even earlier - mid 18th Century

Work Lunch

My work schedule at the moment means that my favourite market haunts, once frequented almost daily, are now very rarely visited at all. While this is probably a good thing for my wallet, I do miss the bargains. That is until today when an ice cream lunch break ended up looking like this
 Happy again.

Valentino

While scouting for some inspiration online I unfortunately found that Valentino's ready to wear ss13 collection is annoyingly desirable.
This is my favourite. Long sleeve tartan ruffle dress - one to look out for.

Window Shopping, Take Two

I wrote a blog post about this beaded collar a few months back, which I saw in the window of a fabric shop in Shepherd's Bush. It's now featuring as a great addition to this ready made dress, which kind of looks like a mini skirt with the reflection of my legs and coat in the window.

Sunday Laundry

A Shepherd's Bush dry cleaners - loved this printed black and yellow dress fronting a rail of suits and shirts ready to be picked up for Monday.

Winter Dance

A busy morning spent yesterday, restyling looks for winter with our fave model... This was towards the end of the shoot when posing got a bit boring and dancing took over.

Holiday Favourites

Spent today sorting things out after a holiday in Greece last week
I left feeling very smug with my packing, where I managed to get about 20 different outfit combinations in to a carry on bag. Even with so many options there were 3 favourite pieces which got the most air time:
This lilac gingham dress is too see through and too short (my fault after attacking it with scissors) for London but was perfect over a bikini
This oversized (obese man's) shirt was the dream cover up
And my hat bought last minute from a charity shop in Devon wasn't off for very long

The Story behind...

Sometimes it's nice to know a little more about what inspires style and fashion trends - all too often things can feel a little foreign... At One Off we have decided to let you behind the scenes, and to explain the story behind certain styling and clothing choices.

This week it's the turn of the Jackie O inspired Fringed Dress:
This dress is simple and chic but crucially not boring or too grown up. Its texture and fringe help to jazz things up a bit.

We love a bit of texture at One Off.

A few months ago, I went through a real Kennedy family fad, which no doubt inspired me to buy this dress when on a One Off shopping trip.

Channel 1960s Kennedy chic when wearing this dress.

We styled it for the photo shoot with a well loved pair  of chunky black suede wedges with an ankle strap, which looks great
but you could wear this dress anyway you want, and team it with a pair of smart loafers
or keep it real 60s preppy vibe with a pair of ballet pumps
We kept it simple for the shoot, but I reckon this dress would be even better with a bit of gold. Throw on a chunky necklace or a pair of hoops to make this a more polished look.

Who knows - maybe this dress is a Jackie O original!

You could do a lot worse than looking like Jackie.

Gingham

One of my favourite fabrics, Gingham feels distinctly British, and reminds me of picnics, school uniforms and cream tea idylls. I wish I had proper gingham clothes, instead I have only variations on the theme - checks of many descriptions, like my trousers, shirt and two dresses (given/lent by Daisy) here. While flicking through a magazine today I saw this Chanel sunglasses advert and thought of a Primark buy I made a few years ago. I've never been sure what this black and white chequered chiffon number is supposed to be worn as (shorts? pj's? underwear? beachwear?!) but I love them all the same.

picnic dress

On the way to buy breakfast, Daisy bought this dress. It looks like a picnic blanket, but in the best way possible. And there was a bit left for living room decoration.
