Attic Fairy Tale

 

 

Unashamedly feminine, fairy tale like shoot by Lucinda Chambers and Corinne Day for Vogue 2002. I remember seeing this in Vogue at the time, tearing it out and keeping it in a folder of shoots that my best friend and I shared of things we loved.

Dedication to a theme

I came across this 1997 Vogue shoot for the first time recently and was struck by how painterly these images look. Grave Coddington is the styling brains behind the story, with Steven Meisel behind the lens. I was totally captivated by these opulent, rich images - so different from the very natural and pared back editorials that are popular at the moment.

Coddington and Meisel have really captured the spirit of the roaring 1920s in America, when a sudden economic and industrial boom changed the way society behaved. The 'new woman' appeared on the scene - complete with a new wardrobe. For me this story by Coddington is so great because even though many of the clothes are contemporary, they are styled in a way that doesn't 'sell' them. I doubt many American Vogue readers rushed out and bought a feather boa. Instead this fashion editorial is dedicated to an age

Fur and Frill

During a visit to the V&A recently I was drawn to the cases of carefully preserved clothes that seemed to really resonate with fashion's current love of all things 70s. Velvet, fur and silk... fashion actually does go in circles.

This arctic fox fur trimmed coat is late 19th Century fare

And these frills and starched bows even earlier - mid 18th Century

After a tip off from a friend I went to see the Christian Marclay show at White Cube, which closed today. 

While I can't say I was particularly blown away by his work, I was certainly inspired by it

Phillipine is wearing the kind of dirtied old leather trench that only a beautiful and chic Parisian like herself, can get away with. Still, it's been in my wardrobe for years and I don't see it going anywhere....

Painter's Studio

A taster of some work I did recently for The Ones 2 Watch. 

We shot in a working artist's studio, who was obviously something of a Rothko fan... I've been wanting to shoot in a painter's studio for a while - my art history days kept coming back to haunt me with lots of images of painters at work. Lucian Freud and Frances Bacon always looking like the cooelest of the lot, and the most sinister in those darkly lit black and white photographs.

Cornish Picnic

While doing some research this morning for an upcoming shoot I came across this picture from c.1910 of a picnic on a Cornish beach

Probably my favourite activity - although probably less billowing cotton and more sun bleached swimming costumes

Clarks Wallabees

I get a very mixed reception when I wear my Clarks Wallabees. Saw today that Supreme's latest collaboration with the shoe brand offers their own line of the lil suede pork pies - guess that means I'm cool now.
