Dave Heath

I visited the Photographer's Gallery this week to see the Deutsche Börse prize, but what really caught my eye were the Dave Heath pictures on display. Famed for his portraits of life in post war North America, Heath was predominantly self taught and well known for his skilled printing technique. Of course, I loved the clothes in these snapshots of 1960s New York, but it's worth a visit if you're sartorially interested or not.

I went to see the Saul Leiter exhibition at the Photographer's Gallery this week - it's free before midday so I recommend swinging by if only to get away from Oxford Street for 10 minutes. I didn't know anything about Leiter, but loved his work - particularly his focus on the small details of everyday life.

Warhol, Lynch & Burroughs

The pictures of Andy Warhol, David Lynch and William S Burroughs are currently on show at The Photographer's Gallery in Oxford Circus. Not primarily known for their photography, the 3 capsule exhibitions cast an intimate and thought provoking light on the period from which each artist worked.

Warhol's photographs clearly refrence his fascination with advertising which we know so well from his painting and prints. His pictures are lively, full of energy and interestingly, people. 

David Lynch's photographs were unsurprisingly cinematic, dramatic and ominous

Some favourites of mine from Burroughs are too difficult to find pictures of, but involve roses being shoved in to coca cola bottles - a favourite practice of mine during my kooky university phase...

I had a little while to burn before a meeting yesterday, so I swung by The Photographer's Gallery for a quick look round.

I'd forgotten that the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize was on. I shortlisted two, and enjoyed the work from Pieter Hugo

But what really caught my eye was the photo collage triptych by John Stezaker:

Found these images quite arresting, their titles definitely lent to their poignancy. I didn't realise that Stezaker had won the photography prize a few days ago. 

The exhibition closes this Sunday - worth checking out before it goes if you're in the area.

Pool Side

The postcard above the mirror in my bedroom from a trip to the Photographer's Gallery last month inspired me to take these poolside pictures on my phone whilst in Spain, two weeks ago.

Almost a bit torturous looking at them now though.
