Midnight Cowboy

I'm one of the few people in London/UK/The World it seems that still uses a DVD player - and borrows DVDs from their local library. A recent hit was Midnight Cowboy, a 1969 Oscar winning film starring Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman. While being very dark in places, the film is also very touching in the relationship forged between pretend cowboy Voight and outcast vagabond Hoffman. And of course....the clothes....

Francesca Woodman

Untitled, Francesca Woodman, 1979
I've been a fan of Woodman's work for a long time - and written about her a few times on this blog over the years. I was reminded of this beautiful picture when looking at the catalogue from last years exhibition at the Tate Liverpool, which showed Woodman's work alongside Egon Shiele's.

Dave Heath

I visited the Photographer's Gallery this week to see the Deutsche Börse prize, but what really caught my eye were the Dave Heath pictures on display. Famed for his portraits of life in post war North America, Heath was predominantly self taught and well known for his skilled printing technique. Of course, I loved the clothes in these snapshots of 1960s New York, but it's worth a visit if you're sartorially interested or not.

Alice Neel

One of the many joys of London is that having time to burn is often a blessing, as I found last week while waiting for a friend to finish work.  Nearby was the Victoria Miro Gallery and a retrospective of American painter Alice Neel's work. What a great show - full of life and vibrancy. Neel sounds like she was a pretty fab, painting and living in New York with her children and long term latino lover, her work focusing on local subjects.

Saul Leiter

Taxi, c.1957
Postman, c.1952

I went to see the Saul Leiter exhibition at the Photographer's Gallery this week - it's free before midday so I recommend swinging by if only to get away from Oxford Street for 10 minutes. I didn't know anything about Leiter, but loved his work - particularly his focus on the small details of everyday life.

Framed

I finally got round to framing this drawing of New York over the weekend, which is now a new addition to my slightly overcrowded dresser

NYC Beads

Tessa went to the US of A and all I got was THIS AMAZING BEADED STATUE OF LIBERTY BOX!!
Apparently when she bought it her company at the time were full of disbelief that anyone would actually want such a thing. That person is ME and once the toffees inside have been demolished I am looking forward to finding a use for this piece of art. Other USA souvenirs already featured on What's She Like? include Hannah's great homemade eNYa T-shirt, see here. Am also reminded of a recent trip to White Cube to see Liza Lou. Thank you West Polar.

NY and Minnesota

I was reminded to dig out my own pictures of New York taken on a trip during summer 2010, by my post on Rob's drawing below.... A few days and nights in the busy city was contrasted by a week or so in the Midwest - Fergus Falls, Northern Minnesota.

New York

I can't wait to frame this NY cityscape that was drawn and given to me by Rob Jensen for my birthday recently. A trip to New York is definitely on my wish list this year, hopefully to source things for my new venture One Off.
