Art Angel Audio

I spent a warm afternoon walking around Whitechapel and Spitalfields a few weeks ago, guided by Janet Cardiff via an audio piece commissioned by Art Angel in 1999. 'Part urban guide, part detective story, part film noir, this audio walk transports individual listeners on foot through the streets and alley ways of Spitalfields, a historic part of London next to the City.'  The audio piece is great - disorientating and distracting in a good way! And I loved walking around the back streets of Spitalfields, something I don't do very often despite living so close. Very uplifted by all the colour of prayer matts, printed wax fabric, market stall dresses...

Muted Neons

Love the brightness of this clashing green and pink sari, and the printed fabrics either side... Bethnal Green road is always inspiring

August Collage

Charity Shop Treasure, flowers, print, colour, Roman Road and Shepherd's Bush Market... a collage of sorts for late summer.

Arrow To The Heart

Another Charlie inspired post (see below) - I love this little gold arrow ring she bought from a pop up shop on Redchurch Street recently. Especially like how the feathers of the arrow wrap round to make the band of the ring.

Creative Day at Hackney House

Spent a very interesting morning at 'Creativity Day' hosted by Hackney House, listening to two different panels of creative speakers whose talks centered around the relationship between their products or practices and the internet.
A wide range of topics were covered and items were even launched from the stage at one point, including Soreen and Richmond Sausages - you kinda had to be there.
My favourite quote of the day was from super cynicist and funny man Mr Bingo, who came out with 'EVERYTHING IS ART.' A slushy comment from a true cynic - but he was convincing.
Tons of free pamphlets and a Richard Nicholl tote too, woohoo!
Hackney House is open until the Olympic Closing Ceremony this Sunday, so if you're in the area you can go check the place out - it's open in the evening too.

Beaded Breakfast

Last week Tessa and Rosa took me to see the new Liza Lou exhibition at White Cube, Hoxton Square. Tessa had done a good job getting me interested in Liza Lou's work prior to the visit. It was a bit disappointing as what was exhibited differed such a lot to her earlier work, some of which I think is incredible - a beaded kitchen!!  Instead it was a lot more reserved:
Untitled #8, 2011
Untitled #1, 2011-12
Zulu Love Letter No.2, 2011-12
I do actually quite like these particular pieces and enjoyed seeing them at the show, but wasn't blown away by the exhibition at all. The intensity of her earlier works such as 'Kitchen' (below) had eased and the beads no longer seemed to make the statement that they could rival paint, but instead simply mimicked it.
Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day, and I generally love anything breakfast related... This probably explains why Liza Lou's 'Kitchen' is such a hit with me, it comes complete with fried eggs

For anyone who wants to know a bit more, here is an enjoyable read in the form of W Magazine's feature on Lou a few years back. And just for good measure, here is another beaded post from Bethnal Green Road last summer.
