Monet's Girl

Comparisons between art and fashion shoots aren't always obvious, or even evident at lot of the time, but every now and then a really good one comes along to enjoy.

 I just saw this shoot for December's issue of German Vogue, and was instantly reminded of Monet's paintings of his wife Camille, particularly the ones painted on the beach

The Beach at Trouville, 1870 

Monet painted this in the open air, proof of which is in the sand stuck in the paint. The composition is thought to be extremely unusual for the time, due to its tight crop and lack of symmetry.

(More) Inspiration

Towards the end of last year I became a bit obsessed with keeping things from magazines etc, flyers, posters, newspaper articles - anything that caught my eye... I am looking out for the perfect sketch/scrap book so that this year I can make sense of all these pieces of paper.

Mid-Week

I was early for my mid-week shift at work today, so walked along to the National Gallery to burn time. These were my picks of the flying visit:

 Ulyssess deriding the Polyphemus - Homer's Odyssey, Turner, 1829

The Immaculate Conception, Diego Velazquez, 1618-19

Water Lilies, Setting Sun, Claude-Oscar Monet, c.1907

Maybe a slightly random choice of paintings, certainly chronologically, but I enjoyed them nonetheless.

And

Poor George Peabody, sporting a cone hat which he definitely didn't put there himself. (The guy in the yellow jumper was furious).
