Textile inspiration at the Tate Modern...

Form Through Colour

Somerset House is one of the best places in London to while away a spare hour or so - particularly the terrace on a sunny day. Form Through Colour is a free exhibition currently showing the work of Gary Hume, Anni and Josef Albers

There were a few of Josef Alber's beautiful Homage to The Square series

Africa

I went to the British Museum last weekend (to see an exhibition that opens in March...whoops), and came across a room of African textiles - 'Social Fabric: African Textiles Today'.

So many beautifully printed fabrics - and a few great slogans too. Really liked this bicycle print with girl power tagline:

 

Hung side by side by a mango print piece:

 But my favourite were probably the fabrics decorated by the faces of Barak Obama and Michael Jackson

Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

A Printed Afternoon

I managed to prove myself as a sartorial magpie yesterday, spotting this lovely fur coat in the upstairs window of a house in Hammersmith. I am hoping no one saw me lingering outside this house taking pictures...

This apron reminded me that I've recently been wondering if it's time for Camo to take a rest - it's a favourite of West Polar, and I know she's been thinking the same thing... Can't work out if I love or hate this wipe clean version. What do you think?

Metallic

I have always been a bit of a magpie, so when I read that metallic is apparently 'in' this season (such a bad expression) I knew I could dig out one or two things that were defiantly shiny. I really want to wear my Aladdin-esque sequin waistcoat more, but I never quite find enough guts to do so. Maybe this winter I will succeed.

Getting Shirty

This matching shirt and scarf combination is probably a little too much to be wearable, but these mannequins in shirt shop 'Eton' always make me really happy on my walk to the station after a day at work.

Loud and Clear

This fabric shop in Shepherd's Bush makes it clear what's going on.

PRINT

Back in the day I wanted to be a textile designer - design the print for fabric and make my clothes out of them, and become famous and work for/own Liberty. But I have since realised that I can't draw, and my enthusiasm ran a little dry. Really didn't mean for these to all be floral.

A1 FABRICS

A1 Fabric on the Goldhawk road is one of London's finest shops, and has everything to indulge the takiest to the most classy of tastes. I'm one for the tacky unfortunately, so I took loads of pictures of sequins... and bought an iron on polar bear.
